Playing the River
If you have been playing well then chances are you will see the river card which is also known as the fifth card that is placed down before the showdown. Once the river card is turned over you will be able to form a hand, you won’t know yet what the other players have yet. If you were waiting on the last card to make or break your hand and the card did not help you then you have to fold and you won’t see the showdown.
With the turn you should know by this point if you are going to bet your hand or not. You have to bet before the other players fold. But they may have checked their hands before you have a chance to raise so make sure you check quickly if you hope or raise before they fold.
There are two mistakes you can make at this point. One is to call a losing bet which in the end will cost you the price of the bet itself. The other mistake is to fold your hand which will also cost you all the money in the pot. You don’t want to fold at this point. If there is even a ray of hope that you have a chance of winning the you need to call. If you have nothing then by all means do not call but if you have a good hand but are not sure if that is the winning hand then call. Don’t fold on the premise that your hand may not be good enough.
Another tip you need to hear is that you need to learn how to read the board. Because the game is played with 5 cards facing up you can examine the cards as they are being put out if the serve your purpose. You also have to learn how to interpret the others players chances as well. You can’t see their hole cards but you can see the cards on the table and you can almost determine if their hands are good or not.
If there are three cards on the table suited together then there is a possibility of another player being able to get a flush, if a player raises when the third suited card is placed down then you should have an idea that they have something good. If the table holds a pair then there could be a chance that the player can make a three of a kind, four of a kind or a full house.
It is very important that during the game that you not only pay attention to your cards but to the cards of the other players as well. Never show your hand unless you have to and the only time you will have to is when you are in the show down. You may not have the best hand but the other players may not have anything good either to show. They are trying to bluff to the showdown.
